With the end of the British monarchy, Barbados became a republic

Barbados Governor and Judge Sandra Mason has been sworn in as the island's first female president in the capital, Bridgetown, replacing Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.

Barbados, a country in the Caribbean region bordering the Atlantic Ocean, renounced the British monarchy and declared itself a republic.

The announcement was made in November 2021, the 55th anniversary of Barbados' independence from Britain and almost 400 years since the arrival of British settlers in the area.

Barbados Governor and Judge Sandra Mason was formally sworn in as the island's first female president in the capital, Bridgetown, replacing Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

The British Prince Charles attended the ceremony to hand over the reins of the kingdom to the country's first president with the Queen's independence and sovereignty, but the Caribbean island will remain a member of the Commonwealth.
