Users will now be able to repair their iPhones themselves

For the first time, American technology company Apple has decided to help users who want to repair their own iPhones.

Apple's 'self-service repair' will help consumers buy original Apple parts and tools who want to repair their phones themselves.

Guidelines for the use of these tools will also be provided.

Under the new program, users will be able to repair broken displays or cameras or, for example, replace outdated batteries.

The new announcement from Apple comes at a time when pressure from the "Right to Repair" movement is mounting. The movement argues that making it difficult to fix your devices is unsustainable and unfair.

Although Apple offers other ways to repair its devices and offers the option of reusing or recycling old devices, the company has never formally supported users to repair their own devices.

Consumers will be asked to make sure they are ready to self-repair before receiving parts and tools and to make sure they understand the full complexity of any repairs if documented. They will also be guided through a series of.

If the repair goes wrong, customers will be able to take it to an official supplier to have it repaired by a professional craftsman, but they will have to pay for it.

The Self-Service Repair program will be linked to thousands of service providers, some operating under Apple and others operating as independent businesses.

In 2019, Apple launched a new program to give freelancers full access to the company's core parts and tools.

Apple says it still expects the services of a professional repair service provider to be the safest and most reliable way for the majority of consumers.

The company said the new service is for technicians with knowledge and experience in repairing electronic devices as it may require accurate work with very small and complex parts and could potentially damage them.

If a user chooses to repair their device themselves, they will sign up online through a third-party provider.

They will then be sent instructions for the relevant parts and repairs and will be asked to send the broken parts back to the company for recycling with the final price.

Initially, Self-Service Repair will be launched in the US for the iPhone 12 and 13. It will be introduced later for Mac computers with M1 chips and in 2022 the service will be extended to other countries.

Apple has hinted that the company is working on making new devices repairable during the design process and that its latest phones are the most repairable devices.
