    Poland-Belarus border crisis


    Russia has sent nuclear-capable bombers into Belarus's airspace in support of Belarus amid a crisis in European countries caused by the influx of thousands of migrants on the Belarusian border.

    Russian bombers were seen flying over Belarus for the second day in a row on Thursday near the Polish-Belarusian border.

    The Russian military said in a statement that the exercise was "not against any third country."

    But Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's deputy ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters at UN headquarters in New York: "This is in response to large-scale construction on the Polish-Belarusian border."

    UN Security Council meeting

    Belarus was condemned by European countries and the United States at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Thursday over tensions between Belarus and the European Union, according to AFP, while Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the European Union. That he should start diplomatic talks with Belarus about about 2,000 migrants.

    The migrants include Kurds from the Middle East in particular, who have been living in tent camps on the border between Belarus and Poland in extreme cold weather.

    At least 10 migrants have died at the border in recent months, seven of them on the Polish border, according to the Polish newspaper Gazeta Viberkza.

    Teams from the UN refugee agency, the International Organization for Migration and the Red Cross visited the camp on Thursday to assess the situation and provide assistance.

    Polish authorities have banned the movement of journalists and charities in the border area under emergency rules.
